The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
