The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
