Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
