The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
