Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
